Description
Martine Jacobs, born in 1956 in Amsterdam, is a well-known pastel artist who specializes in creating colorful pastel drawings. Her work is characterized by vibrant colors and a soft, dreamy quality.
This is a print colored with pastel pencils.
The work was designed and colored by Martine Jacobs.
By coloring the prints herself, Martine can add her own style, feeling, and emotion to the work. This makes each print unique and authentic.
With this pastel work, I wanted to not only depict the myth of Sisyphus but also evoke a universal sense of human struggle and perseverance. The figure is anonymous and stylized, as it can be anyone: you, me, any person struggling with their own 'boulder'.
The slanted line symbolizes the eternal slope of life, the heavy burden we push up time and again. The colored areas in the background represent the many emotions and facets of existence — sometimes warm and hopeful, sometimes cool and distant.
I chose soft, flowing lines and pastel colors to emphasize the contrast between the hardness of the task and the vulnerability of the human.
This work is not only about punishment but also about perseverance. Even when the stone rolls down again and again, the figure gets up and pushes on. In that lies, I think, a certain beauty and perhaps even freedom.”
